What is Pores?

Pores are small openings on the skin's surface that are linked to hair follicles and glands that produce oil and sweat. They play a key role in maintaining skin health by allowing the release of sebum (oil) and sweat, which lubricate and cool the skin.

Pore size can vary due to genetics, skin type, and age. Pores can appear larger when clogged with oil, dead skin cells, or impurities, leading to blackheads and whiteheads. Factors like aging, sun damage, and loss of skin elasticity can also cause pores to appear larger.

Type of Pores

Sebaceous Pores (Oil Pores)
Sebaceous Pores (Oil Pores)
These pores are connected to sebaceous glands, which produce sebum (oil). Sebaceous pores are primarily found in higher concentrations on the face, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). They help to lubricate and protect the skin by secreting oil onto its surface.
Sweat Pores
Sweat Pores
These pores are connected to sweat glands, which produce sweat. There are two types of sweat glands:
  • Eccrine Glands: Found all over the body, these glands produce a watery sweat that helps regulate body temperature through evaporation.
  • Apocrine Glands: Located mainly in areas with hair follicles such as the armpits and groin, these glands produce a thicker sweat that can develop an odor when broken down by bacteria on the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can open pores be treated permanently?
Does Vitamin C Shrink Pores?

Vitamin C can improve skin texture and the appearance of pores by increasing elastin and collagen levels. This increase in the dermal matrix supports the entrance of pores, making them smaller. On the other hand, excessive use of ascorbic acid can lead to skin irritation & swelling, potentially making pores seem larger.
